Is Mr Foley acceptable to the Prime Minister?

MR O'DONNELL:

We are

From our point of view our priority on Northern Ireland is very much to get the talks going again, to get all the parties round the table as we did successfully earlier. So that is number 1. Anything which helps that process of course we welcome. very pleased about the shift of emphasis in America away from the election campaign talk about peace envoy towards fact-finding mission. We have to wait and see who they come up with in terms of names, obviously we are not indifferent to the name. Foley has been very robust in his criticism of the IRA and very robust in speaking out against terrorism, so we have the highest respect for Speaker Foley.

QUESTION:

Do you think that the Prime Minister will be able to establish the same type of rapport with Mr Clinton as he has with George Bush?

MR O'DONNELL:

It is very difficult to say that before they have met, is it not, that would be somewhat presumptuous. They are very similar in age, there are certain similarities in background. Knowing the Prime Minister, I would think they will probably get on very well, but I have never met President Clinton so at the moment it has to be my subjective opinion. I expect they will.
