JONATHAN DIMBLEBY: HONG KONG

1.

At his meeting with the Secretary of State on 9 March, Jonathan Dimbleby asked for an on-the-record interview with the Secretary of State and renewed his bid to film a policy meeting with officials: both for his series on Hong Kong. The Secretary of State agreed to both in principle. Dimbleby has followed this up with letters to the Secretary of State and to

me.

2.

Office meetings on Hong Kong are always likely to be sensitive but we should bear in mind that Dimbleby will constantly return to the charge and also that the programme will not be broadcast until after 1997. Dimbleby knows that we are likely to be taking stock within the Office following the Governor's decision to gazette. I am not pressing to allow filming of today's meeting especially as it is likely to be preparation for a Commons statement. But we shall need to sort out both Dimbleby's requests at some stage. Any advice you may have on timing which would suit us would be welcome.
