Thank you

so much for that splendid lunch yesterday, which both Sue and I enjoyed enormously. We were lucky of course in our neighbours on both sides! It was very good of you to have done that for John, and I think he deserved it. Nicky, who I know has spoken with you since, was mortified, but he told me what happened.

I only wrote just to

Thank you for mentioning my letter. let you know what I am up to. I plan to do quite a lot of travelling this year, partly to give John Birt a chance of running the ship on his

his own without my looking over his shoulder and partly because one or two things seem to have cropped up. I have to go to Australia every year for an insurance company and am not allowed, either by Sue or the doctors, to do the trip in one, SO I have to break the journey. This year I will be spending two days in Japan, where NHK are the nearest equivalent to the British Broadcasting Corporation. I think my office has told the Ambassador: also two days in Hong Kong on the way back, which was the birthplace of World Service Television and where we are staying with Chris and Lavender.

Later in the year I have accepted an invitation to go to Czechland (?), Slovakia and Hungary. They think I know about how to handle a broadcasting service and keep the Government at bay. I am not sure that my experience will be of much use to them in their rather different political climate!

not and wider to you with
