Medical

Did the Governor know about this when he took on the appointment?

NO. The Governor has had annual medical check-ups for many years. He also had a full check-up before coming to Hong Kong, which gave no indication of the present problem.

Is this condition a result of the stress he has been under since he arrived in Hong Kong?

Stress might be a contributory factor, but not the only one (e.g. hereditary characteristics may be another factor). Mr. Patten has done a number of demanding and stressful jobs in recent years. No evidence to suggest that the pressures of his present job have been a major factor.

Who will pay for the Governor's treatment?

Under his terms and conditions, the Governor receives his medical treatment free; [but he will pay the daily maintenance fee.] How much? Ask Hospital Authority.

Will the Governor be cutting down on his work schedule?

The Governor will take the advice of his doctors. Confident of a complete and full recovery.

Will the Governor be able to keep up the same pace in future?

No reason why the Governor will not be able to carry out his job effectively. But naturally he will take things slightly easier immediately after his treatment.

Who will perform the treatment?

The medical team have requested confidentiality.
