Answer: Our aim is to maintain a global pattern of representation. But we cannot rule out some post closures. Some 15 posts closed in last ten years. [Have already taken decision to close Douala]. But need to take decisions carefully, in light of priorities worldwide.

Answer: No decisions yet on 1994/95 and 1995/96. stand, figures mean that it would not be possible to keep up

all activities even at reduced levels. But Foreign Secretary

has agreed with Chancellor of Exchequer that during this year we shall be studying ways in which this country's diplomatic and related work overseas can be enhanced within the disciplines set by the Chancellor of Exchequer and the Chief Secretary for government spending as a whole.

Question: What about new activities?

Answer: In addition to new posts, increased UN activity. new peacekeeping operations mandated since 1988 against 13 in the whole period 1945-1988, including Cambodia and Yugoslavia. Also face significant uses in obligatory subscriptions to

international organisations.
