TRANSCRIPT OF DOORSTEP
GIVEN BY THE FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR DOUGLAS HURD,
IN LONDON
ON TUESDAY, 19 JANUARY 1993
Pm 777
FOREIGN SECRETARY:
We had a very useful meeting between the Prime Minister and the
CRC delegation. We showed them our interest in reaching
agreement, that the Governor's proposals were proposals and that
they fall to be discussed by the people of Hong Kong in LEGCO, but
also we are perfectly willing to discuss them with Chiná, as we
have always said.
QUESTION:
Is the British government wishing to make amendments to those
proposals?
FOREIGN SECRETARY:
There are different ways in which a discussion can take place,
there may well be amendments come forward during the LEGCO
discussion, that is one way, but there are other ways in which we
can hold a discussion with China if the Chinese are willing, I do
not think that will be a great obstacle.
