Buchanan's suggestion I talked also to Professor John Hearn head of the Business Technology Centre at the Hong Kong Polytechnic about these scholarships. He is keen to help and thinks that it ought to be possible to identify suitable candidates in the companies that are involved at the Technology Centre. Mr Buchanan added that if the British Council were to be given a direct involvement in the selection of the candidates, he would pay the airfares from Hong Kong to London from the British Council budget. In short, I think the Joint Directorate should put in a strong plea to the CBI at the 25 June meeting for 2 scholarship places Meanwhile we will try to be allocated to Hong Kong in 1994/95. to identify 2 candidates for this year's allocation before the September 1993 cut-off date. With the British Council's, Professor Hearn's and this office's direct involvement we should be able to find two suitable candidates. The monthly allowance may however have to be increased slightly and this point too should be explored with the CBI.
