Dear Janes,

CBI OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIPS: 1994/5

Thank you for your letter of 23 July on the CBI Overseas Scholarship Programme for Hong Kong.

The CBI Scholarship Board met on Wednesday 21 July to consider which countries should be invited to propose candidates for participation in the CBI Scholarship Scheme in 1994/5. The FCO was represented at the meeting by David Sargent of the Joint Directorate who managed to secure a two scholarship allocation for Hong Kong for 1994/5.

The question of the shared cost of airfares was not raised at the formal meeting. However, Mr Sargent discussed the issue informally with DTI officials, who fund up to 50% of the scheme. He was informed that there is a certain amount of flexibility within the programme which would allow the DTI to consider any proposal which might enhance the scheme, including assistance in the cost of airfares. The same would apply to the issue of increases in the monthly allowance.

On a cautionary note, the Joint Directorate have asked that we take into consideration the danger of setting a precedent for other country recipients of CBI Scholarships. They have therefore suggested that before taking matters forward, you should contact Stuart Pyle from the DTI/PEP3d (tel 215 6762).
