I have

copy of the elegant tenth anniversary Register of Jardine Scholars which you sent to Peter Ricketts.

This set me wondering whether there might be scope for collaboration between the Jardine Foundation and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office with the aim of increasing the number of awards available to outstanding students in the countries where the Foundation offers scholarships.

be

On the FCO side the vehicle for such collaboration would our programme of scholarships for overseas students jointly funded with business, industry and grant giving foundations. This is described in the enclosed booklet. The FCO's objectives are similar to the Foundation's, namely to provide the opportunity for study in this country to young men and women who have the potential to become leaders, decision makers and opinion formers in their own country; and our selection criteria are essentially the same as yours.

I

There is, however, one important difference. The FCO programme is targeted exclusively at postgraduate students, whereas note that the Foundation only supports postgraduates exceptionally. But it occurs to me that if the Foundation were to consider expanding the scope of its awards to include more postgraduate students, a joint sponsorship scheme with the FCC would provide a cost-effective means of doing so.

If you and your Foundation colleagues are attracted by this idea I should be happy to discuss it with you in more detail.

Yours sincerely

David Thomas
