The Prime Minister having done a favour for Lord Young by writing to the Latvian Prime Minister at short notice, Lord Young has repaid the compliment by asking to see the Prime Minister twice in the New Year to discuss China. He is concerned about the problems being posed for British business by current policy on, in particular, Hong Kong. He would like to see the Prime Minister tête-à-tête first to explore possible solutions, and then bring in a group including people like Lord Weinstock.
I should be grateful for your comments. I think it unlikely that the Prime Minister will want to steer Lord Young towards the Foreign Secretary in the first instance, but I should be grateful to know whether they have met to discuss this topic recently and also for your comments on the optimal time for such a meeting or meetings.
I am copying this letter to Elizabeth Jones (Department of Trade and Industry).
