CALL BY SIR CHARLES POWELL ON THE SECRETARY OF STATE: 21 JULY

Line to Take

Talks in Peking

-

Have heard from our team in Peking that the first day of

- the Eighth Round was workmanlike with no dramatic

developments.

Chinese discrimination against Jardines

-

As 8 rold

I

I raised this issue with Jiang Enzhu in Peking.

An unfortunate episode, but hope that your and our efforts

have made the Chinese think twice. Have you heard of any more

incidents?

Container Terminal 9

We have pressed the Chinese hard on the CT9 land grant but

as yet no indication of when they will agree to it.

Is the consortium likely to hold together and are any of the companies under pressure to withdraw?

Measures to control Chinese economy and effects on Hong Kong

Chinese have announced a set of prudent measures which, if implemented, should enable the Chinese economy to experience a

soft landing. Should lead to slower but more stable growth.

Inevitably some effect on Hong Kong given the high level of integration between the two economies. May result in slight

reduction in growth in GDP and some correction in asset

values.

-

New Kuala Lumpur International Airport

I understand that Jardines/Gammon have a strong interest in this project. What is the latest position?

Hong Kong Takeover Code (Defensive)

- It will be up to the Hong Kong Securities and Future

Commission and the Hong Kong Takeovers panel to decide whether

or not the Takeover Code should continue to apply to Jardines. Understand next step is for you to put a formal proposal

to the Securities and Futures Commission.
