Chamber Events

63% of members feel there are enough Chamber events, the most popular being lunches, cocktails and seminars with lunches rated as providing the most assistance to members' business. Overseas missions got a low rating, suggesting perhaps the need to focus efforts on Hong Kong and China, rather than peripheral

areas.

New Events

Over half the respondents would like to see more meetings with visiting British businessmen, presumably pursuing the theme of networking opportunities. A similar proportion indicated they would also like to see more seminars.

Information from the Chamber

It was agreed that more analyses and background reports would be a welcome addition to the Chamber's

services.

7.

Political Position

75% felt that the Chamber should take a position on political matters where they affect British business and that such a position should be widely publicized. This echoes the desire, noted elsewhere in the study, for the Chamber to be clearly seen as an active lobbying force.

8.

The Future

After clarifying the additional dimension of the Chamber's activity in relation to China, an overwhelming majority ( 97 % of those who replied) endorsed the Chamber's vision of its future as an effective and authoritative representative of British business in Hong Kong to ensure that the momentum of 150 years of British presence is maintained past 1997 into the 21st Century, and as a promoter of the development of British business interests in China.

SECTION D - OBJECTIVES

We believe that in order to achieve the goal set out in section B "Vision for the future”, the British Chamber should focus on four basic objectives. We are satisfied that these are entirely consistent with the findings of the membership survey. The four objectives are as follows:

1.

Be a solidly established and soundly funded organization supported by an active membership consisting of all British companies of significance with business interests relating to Hong Kong and/or China.

2.

3.

4.

Clearly be seen to provide business services and networking opportunities that add value and are relevant to its members' interests.

Be a definitive authority on British business in Hong Kong and China and the key issues relating to its

success.

Be accepted as the authoritative and effective voice representing and reflecting the views of British business interests in Hong Kong and China.
