Just before Christmas I sent you a copy of a letter which I had received from Sir Adrian Swire describing current Chinese pressures on his company. You may care to file the top copy, which is attached to this minute, in the department.
2.
I sent a simple acknowledgement to Sir Adrian before the holidays. I wonder whether you think we ought to reply more substantively now. This is only worth doing, I believe, if we have some useful advice to give. The threats summarised in paragraph 7 of Sir Adrian's letter are pretty dire. I would not want to leave him with any feeling that the FCO have not taken serious note of this.
