Conclusion
My message to this conference is simple.
Britain has been in Asia for generations. We have many friends and assets in
the region, pre-eminently in Hong Kong.
Achieving a smooth transfer of sovereignty and making a success of the "one country two systems" concept is a unique and difficult undertaking. We are
determined to succeed.
And although Britain's administration of Hong Kong will end in 1997, Hong
Kong's attractions for British business will endure. The emergence of East
Asia as the world's economic power-house for the twenty-first century means
there are opportunities to be seized. We must take them. No businessman can
afford to ignore the advantages Hong Kong has to offer. It is the gateway to all
Asia-Pacific, the key which will help unlock the wealth of its markets.
Hong Kong works. It will continue to work. Make it work for you.
