CAMARO CASE
1. We spoke earlier this week about Hong Kong telno 924 to the FCO (attached). I have tried without success to talk to Jim Springer (Department of Justice) about this, and in particular to ask him (1) how the US has reacted to the news in TUR, and (ii) where we go from here (can the request be revised and rapidly processed?).
2.
If you have time next week, I should be grateful if you could touch base with Springer (telno 514 5396). obviously need to do what we can to get this back on the right track: if this cannot be done, there is a risk of US mandatory subpoenas in this case, and we can expect any future exhortations to the US to use letters rogatory to be greeted with hollow laughter.
