You will need to consider carefully whether to inform the Chinese of your application in advance of it becoming public. Whilst there is no obligation to do so it may be wise to inform them in a low key manner SO as to avoid any potential for a row. On the other hand we would expect any sign that China would expect equal or comparable treatment will make Hong Kong's application more difficult.
