Dear Ambassador,

Attached, please find the fifth issue of HIGHLIGHTS of the OECD Future Studies Information Base on 'China's Economic Future: Can Growth be Sustained?',

We have chosen to focus this issue of HIGHLIGHTS on China because, with one-fifth of the world's population and one of the fastest growth rates anywhere, it has the potential to become over the next two decades a major regional economic power and a key player in the world economy.

HIGHLIGHTS Number 5, like the previous issues, offers readers a dossier of abstracts (established from documents recently entered onto the Information Base) plus a lead article which presents the main conclusions or findings contained in the attached records and other pertinent documents entered onto the Base.

I hope you find these HIGHLIGHTS interesting and I look forward to any comments you may have or any suggestions for future themes.

Accept, Sir, the assurance of my highest consideration.
