FOREIGN POLICY REVIEW PRIORITIES

Thank you for your very helpful teleletter of 29 January, which I have distributed widely.

2.

Robin Renwick suggested to me when he was last here that I should pay a fairly early visit to Washington to discuss key issues in my area with senior officials. I should be grateful for the best guess you can give me as to when the right moment for such a visit might be. I must obviously wait until the

appointment of the relevant officials has been confirmed. Thereafter I should aim to come sufficiently early to feed in views before policy papers have been taken too far forward (and I should not come at a time inconvenient to the Embassy).

3.

As I see it the main issues in my area which require

discussion with the new Administration are:-

China

Hong Kong

Cambodia

(d)

Vietnam

(e)

North Korea

(f)

Kashmir

(g)

(h)

(i)

4.

nuclear proliferation in the sub-continent (possibly) Afghanistan

Argentina/Falklands (including consultation procedure on US arms supplies to Argentina)

At present I have no major travel plans till the period 7 to 16 May when I expect to be in Australia and New Zealand.
