*†5 Sir Thomas Arnold (Hazel Grove): To ask the President of the Board of Trade, if he will make a statement on the visit of the Minister for Trade to the People's Republic of China.

I made a successful visit to Guangzhou 3-5 January with a team

of 20 senior businessmen to pursue important opportunities in

the fastest growing region of the world. I made clear our

long term commitment to a significant expansion of trade

between the United Kingdom and China. Our substantial

commercial presence in Hong Kong has a vital role to play in

this process.
