The Economist: "Hong Kong is one of the world's most successful socieities not just because of free trade and laissez-faire. It has had good government delivered by the able civil service of a benign colonial regime. It has a fair share of civil liberties and from the later 1970s onwards, it has enjoyed that great Asian rarity, a relative absence of corruption." (April 1992)

Milton Friedman said, "If you want to know how capitalism really works, take a look at Hong Kong."

The European Community's representative on GATT described Hong Kong in GATT's major review of its policies in August 1990 as a "handbook on how to build up a successful economy".
