Sir J Coles Mr Broadbent,

Chief Economic Adviser

Mr Fry, FED Mr Wye, RAD

CHINESE ECONOMY: WILL HONG KONG FEEL THE HEAT?

1.

Thank you for your minute of 14 July (not copied to the Economic Advisers). Like you, I found the Hong Kong telegram a little over-sanguine, and I agree that it would be helpful to administer a tactful corrective when an opportunity arises.

2.

I was interested to read the observations of the Economic Advisers, quoted in your minute, about the chances that current economic and financial measures in China can lead to a soft landing.

3.

I understand that the Economic Advisers have also made a major contribution to a JIC paper on the new Chinese economic measures which is shortly to appear: Mr Broadbent has one or two supplementary thoughts, on which he will be minuting. I hope that the Economic Advisers can continue to monitor closely the

implementation of the new measures in China, with a view to updating their assessment once the effects begin to work through into the real economy.
