I am asking Members to tell me of any special interests in Hong Kong and I will report these to you. Obviously, however, Members will be interested to learn as much as possible about the current scene in Hong Kong especially with respect to internal politics and the negotiations on the Territory's future. I appreciate that in August many people may be away but Members would naturally appreciate meeting the Governor if possible as well as other politicians and officials. If possible they would value meeting a cross-section of Members of the Legislative Council in order to hear different opinions.

When you wrote to me on 15th February you said that it was planned to arrange a two-day programme for Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th August. This sounds absolutely fine and will leave Members free to pursue their own interests on Thursday 12th and part of Friday 13th. I think it possible that some may wish to make private visits to Shenzhen or Guangzhou: I intend to make no attempt to sponsor or organise this, but I should like to be able to offer advice on train and boat timetables and so forth. Perhaps your colleagues in Hong Kong could help me here.
