Dear
Peter,

Following by fax is an article in today's SCMP giving details of two questions members of UDHK have put down for LegCo sittings on 12 and 19 May respectively. This will be followed by a motion debate on 26 May urging HKG to disclose the agenda of each meeting and to give regular report on progress of the talks. The one on 19 May is tiresome as it cuts right into the middle of our meeting with the Governor and HMA Peking.
We are working on answers to these questions. do not think we need to bother you as I will just have to stonewall. I am getting quite used to it.

You will be interested to note that next to this front page article is one entitled "Top civil servants get China warning" in which an NCNA official reminded HKG officials especially (as the Governor would say) your humble servant "should not go too far" in supporting the Government's policies! How pathetic can these people be? I gather he was trying to assure the civil service that there will be no reprisals after 1997 for what they did in the line of duty before 1997, but cannot resist the temptation to get at people like me. This will of course only have the opposite effect. As far as I am concerned this is water off a duck's back.
See you soon,
Yours
