I had breakfast this morning with Martin Barrow (he keeps in pretty regular touch with me about LegCo developments).

On this occasion, Mr Barrow was rather preoccupied with the report which had appeared in this morning's South China Morning Post quoting the Vice-Minister for Foreign Trade and Economic Relations as saying that Mr Barrow had told him during a recent visit by the General Chamber of Commerce to Peking that Jardines was "willing to correct its mistakes in the past". Mr Barrow said that this was pure fabrication: but he was not rushing to deny it in case it helped to take some of the steam out of the renewed Chinese attacks on Jardines. As regards the impact of these attacks on Jardines' business generally, Mr Barrow commented that there was a mixed picture: two joint ventures had been signed in the last weeks (and Jardines, as GEC's agents in China, will benefit from the Marconi/GEC air traffic control radar contract for Nanjing Airport). But there was some evidence of Chinese middle managers taking the initiative to turn business away from Jardines.

- He confirmed that there was a strong feeling in the community, reflected in LegCo, that there should be talks and that the representation issue should not be allowed to block them.
