Lastly I hope you can clear the air about press reports that the Governor might be recalled to London to succeed you. I hope you understand that given the bitter row with China and the personal attacks against the Governor, a decision by London to recall Mr Patten would be seen as a sign of capitulation and ignominy, and would deal a severe blow to the colony's morale. I am copying this letter to the Governor.
