THE GOVERNOR'S CONSTITUTI ONAL PACKAGE AND OTHER VIOLATIONS: NEWS FROM THE COMMERCIAL FRONT

1.

At the risk of stepping over the bounds of a Trade Commissioner's functions, it might be helpful to set down some first-hand impressions of the views of senior individuals around town, largely in the business community. The last month has given me a pretty unique opportunity to seek out and call on a wide number of the senior personalities around Hong Kong. What I have found will come as no surprise, but it is nonetheless worth recording.

2. The overall impression is that the business community does not want the tree shaken again. They want the current constitutional talks to produce a solution which avoids confrontation. They want to "go on making money", a phrase heard from many of my contacts.
