1. The FAC has now agreed the terms of reference for its forthcoming inquiry which will be to look into "Political and economic relations between the UK and China in the period up to and beyond 1997".

2.

Members have now stated their intention to travel out to the area between 12-22 October 1993, subject to any further advice from us. At present the plan is to travel first to China (Beijing and Guandong), then on to Taiwan and finally Hong Kong. The Committee may consider splitting into two groups for part of the visit, and might also yet consider including Shanghai in the itinerary.

3. In order to take matters further the Clerk would appreciate advice on the following points:

i) Timing: is the timing and the order of the proposed visit inappropriate or does it cause particular difficulties

ii)

Are there any potential difficulties in making travel arrangements in the area

iii) The visit includes the weekend of 16/17 October: is there any view about where the Committee should be in order to make the best use of the time available

iv) Any other general advice or warnings that the Clerk should be aware of in setting up programmes for such a visit.

4. The Clerk has asked for replies to these questions by 28 April, and I should be grateful if this could be with PRU by close of play 27 April.

QG Eyre-Wilson
