5. As relations between Beijing and Taipei expand either directly or through Hong Kong, there is need in the interests of world free trade for mainland China and Taiwan to be brought into the GATT system at an early date. Britain's support in this direction would be a key factor in strengthening Sino-British economic ties.

In redefining U.K. Chinese ties into the 21st century, the Select Committee could usefully seek expansion of areas of mutual interest, both at the official and NGO levels. Our Association would only emphasize in this short submission the need for more two-way exchanges in education, technology, culture, tourism, and among the women's and youth organizations of both great countries.
