Legal Appointments
9.
The Governor reported that the Chief Justice had agreed to
stay on until 1996 and had signed up to a number of
administrative improvements. HKG would probably wish us to revive the bid to the Lord Chamberlain's Department for help
in finding judges (not only Judges of Appeal but also for the
Hong Kong High Court). He thought someone like Andrew Lee
might come over to consult.
ACTION HKD to pursue
Shengen/EC Visa Requirements
11. Mr Morris reported that we were proposing to lobby the 5
Shengen parties who currently did not require visas for Hong
Kong people not to impose this requirement (or at least not to
anticipate the common date). We would then address the
question of an EC common visa list, but as this took us into
Maastricht territory majority voting etc it was a complex
area. It was agreed that Mr Appleyard would be invited to
raise this with his fellow EC Political Directors on his
return from leave in mid-August.
