MAT

Read with interest your letter to the PM. Have also received separate report from Dr Michael Clark on the British Group's involvement. IPU Conferences provide a useful forum for cementing old relationships and fostering new.

Note Conference agreed to examine the feasibility of sending a Mission to Belgrade. Caution required. Await outcome of Athens meeting. UN best placed to pressurise Serbs. Danger of too many cooks.

Interested to hear your account of meetings with Prime Minister Narasima Rao and Mr Sukh Ram, the new Minister of Communications. Bilateral relations in good shape. Welcome your ideas for taking these forward. Commercial prospects look good, especially on

Hawk; understand you are in contact with Mr Heseltine.

Note your suggestion of a joint working party of Parliamentarians. Also the possibility of visiting Peking en route to Canberra. Talks between British and Chinese officials now underway. Await outcome before further consideration of a Parliamentary party.

Understand you are to visit Italy at end of meth. Welcome anything you can do to stimulate closer British/Italian Parliamentary contact.

Welcome any further thoughts on your proposal to hold a meeting of

Parliamentarians in London next year.
