He wondered whether the Department could make available to him some facts and figures on the relationship between on the one hand British defence capabilities, our defence industries and, on the other, UK arms exports as well as on levels of employment generated by defence industries in relevant geographical areas. He thought that detailed figures might show (a) the trade with Iraq/Iran/Jordan was important and (b) that sacrifices were made (ie that guidelines did indeed restrict the arms trade).

I discussed this point with Sir R Butler too. saw no objection to our providing Lord Howe or other witnessess with factual information. There need, therefore, be, no inhibition on this score. I am not sure whether statistical information of this kind is readily available within the FCO. But I would be grateful if Mr Donnelly would investigate, seeking if necessary the help of DESO. I should like to get back in touch with Lord Howe after the holidays if we have any useful information to pass on to him.
