SIR PERCY CRADOCK'S MEMOIRS

We discussed Sir Percy Cradock's letter of 8 June to Sir Robin Butler responding to our proposal on the handling of his memoirs (attached, together with a copy of Sir R Butler's letter). We agreed that we should advise the Cabinet Secretary to have one further try to dissuade Sir P Cradock and should also take the opportunity to indicate the two specific revelations identified in my earlier submission which should be excised from the manuscript if Sir P Cradock decides to ignore our broader advice. (My third point was less specific, and in the interests of avoiding detailed textual exegesis is perhaps better left aside).

2.

I now submit a draft letter from the PUS to Sir Robin Butler. We should consult the Governor before putting this to the PUS. I think that the most effective channel would be for Sir J Coles to write to the Governor. I also submit a draft letter. We have not so far sent to the Governor copies of the correspondence with Sir P Cradock: I suggest we maintain this practice, and have therefore summarised the latest exchanges in the letter from Sir J Coles.
