During 1991, seizures of cocaine have occurred in every state except Tasmania, with most seizures being made in New South Wales, the most populous Australian state. Cocaine is available in all mainland capital cities. One significant seizure occurred in February 1991 when 25 kg of cocaine was found at Sydney Airport concealed within a solar generator that had entered Australia aboard a Lufthansa flight. The cocaine originated in South America.

Law enforcement agencies are seizing cocaine in increasing amounts. in Australia. However it is not generally believed that the drug has reached the problem levels of cannabis, heroin or amphetamine.

In the past two years notable domestic seizures have included cocaine concealed inside grinding wheels, solar power panels, skis, a skateboard, hang glider components, the struts of a crate containing a car and impregnated into clothing. The most noticeable trend over the past year has been an increase in the use of impregnation as a concealment technique.

The steady increase in the number of seizures and quantity of cocaine seized have been partly due to an increased awareness of the problem, the establishment of an AFP liaison office in South America and enhanced intelligence gathering capabilities.

To date crack cocaine has not been discovered on the streets of Australia in any significant quantities. In February 1991 there was one seizure of crack totalling 01 gm. It is unlikely that this drug will gain any hold on the Australian market, as has happened in the United States, due mainly to the lack of the sociological conditions which seem to accompany the spread of its abuse in other countries.

The importation of LSD increased slightly during 1991 and in 1992 with the international mail system being the medium in which most of the detections took place. It appears that LSD has regained a resurgent popularity in the drug market. The slight increase in LSD use remains unexplained. It should
