Briefs should comprise objectives, line to take and essential background (this is a relatively short meeting with a substantial agenda). In general the FCO side speaks on political and economic developments, and the Society on prospects for scientific collaboration. Any background or specific points to make on scientific relations, in addition to economic/political/ bilateral policy matters would however be extremely helpful. The briefing material for, and record of, the 1992 meeting (held in the FCO on 20 February) gives a good idea of what is
required.
Any recipients of this minute who do not have copies of that material are welcome to consult the full set held in
ESED.

Items 1-8 were suggested by the Society, and broadly follow last year's agenda. Two exceptions: Japan, included because the President of the Society, Sir Michael Atiyah, intends to visit that country later this year, and population, on which the Society will wish to outline their involvement in the forthcoming Conference of Science Academies on Population Issues, to be held in New Delhi in October. The brief on population issues should be short - bull points plus perhaps an inquiry into the relationship between the New Delhi Conference and the 1994 Cairo Conference. Though not part of the formal agenda, a full briefing from CRD on joint scholarship schemes with the Royal Society, and other relevant matters, will be helpful.
4. I would be grateful to receive 8 copies of briefing in final form by close of play on Wednesday 17 February.
