PORT DEVELOPMENTS IN HONG KONG AND CHINA
23/11
23/
1. I wrote to you on 4 October to draw attention to some big port developments and to ask for a steer on what Britain can expect to offer in terms of container crane equipment and other specialist requirements for developments of this nature.
2. It really would be helpful if you could give us soMĚ advice on this. In addition to the projects mentioned in the letter, Swire Pacific and P&O yesterday signed a joint-venture with China Merchants (Holdings) and the China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) for the development and operation of a sizable container terminal at Shekou just over the border in Guangdong.
=
3. The Shekoù terminal began operations in August 1991 with through put of between 80,000 and 100,000 TEU's (twenty foot equipment units one container) expected this year. This is on the basis of the two existing berths. The development includes a total of 4 more berths, in two phases. And the forecast is that after 5 or 6 years Shekou might be able to handle something like 10% of the market share of the South China Sea coast including Shanghai.
