Planning is progressing well on the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system which helps to enhance the safety and frequency of train operations. Contract will be awarded in the near future for this system which is expected to be installed three and a half years from now.
Last but not least, the KCRC is embarking on a HK$620 million project to construct noise barriers at 18 separate locations along the railway, which will take about ten years to complete.
This large scale noise reduction project comprises the
full construction of four types of barriers, namely: enclosures, partial enclosures, station covers and trackside barriers. All these structures will be designed to reduce the train noise to comply with the requirements of the Govenment's Noise Control Ordinance. The first location to be dealt with is Tai Wo Estate in Tai Po. Mott MacDonald has been appointed as the main consultant of this project, which is now working on detailed designs for noise reduction structure for the Tai Wo station. It has coordinated with the Hong Kong Polytechnic on laboratory research on acoustic materials, which has now been completed. Submissions of interest for the supply of materials from universal acoustic materials suppliers have already been invited, and tenders for the supply contract are anticipated to be called in the next few months.
