Major Projects in Hong Kong
1. One of the tasks given me for my brief incumbency of the British Trade Commission was to ensure a continuous flow of reporting on the major projects under discussion or preparation in the territory. I am conscious that, as a new boy, it takes time to familiarise oneself with not only what is going on
The here, but also with what has already been fully reported. real trick is to ensure that the specialists in PEP and related DTI departments are kept constantly up to date while more senior officials and Ministers are given occasional more general summaries.

My calls around town have been taking me to meet the bigger players, including, on the airport, the Provisional Airport Authority (PAA) and the New Airport Project Coordination Office (NAPCO); on the rail projects, the MTRC, the KCRC and the Commissioner for Transport; and on environmental projects, the Directors of Drainage Services and of Environmental Protection. I have been well received everywhere, and some of the information and wisdom I have picked up has been finding its way into our reporting, for instance the telegram updating FCO
I was and DTI on the airport (BTC tel No. 187 of 5 July). recently passed by the Drainage people an impressive list of British successes in the drainage and sewerage fields, and I am constantly made aware of the spread of British engineering consultancy expertise at work in Hong Kong.
