OUTLINE PROGRAMME FOR THE RUN DOWN OF THE HONG KONG GARRISON

1993

British Forces Hong Kong (BFHK) cease recruiting of HKMSC.

One transport squadron relocates (Nov) to the UK.

1994

The

British Battalion (1BW) move (Aug) to UK and are not

replaced.

Two Gurkha battalions amalgamate (Sep) in Hong Kong to form 1 RGR, the final resident battalion.

HQ Brigade of Gurkhas and Gurkha Training Depot relocate (Dec) to the UK.

Reductions occur in headquarters, combat support regiments and support services.

Gallipoli Lines, Blackdown Barracks and Stanley Fort handed back to the Hong Kong Government.

1995

Responsibility for Nepal and Brunei passes (Apr) from BFHK to HQ

UKLF.

Hong Kong Garrison reduces in strength to around 3000.

Perowne Barracks and Cassino Lines handed back to the Hong Kong Government.

RHKR (V) disbands (Sep).
