HONG KONG: PRESS ENQUIRIES

1. Hong Kong have reported a few questions from the local press on "what the garrison might do if China takes steps to recover sovereignty before July 1997". This follows the most recent leak by the Chinese of details of discussions held with the UK in the run-up to the 1984 agreement, during which they hinted they might take action if there was severe internal unrest in Hong Kong.

In case of enquiries in the UK I attach defensive Q&A material which has been agreed with the FCO and will be used by the Press Office in Hong Kong.
