be adapted to reflect and respond to the on-shore and political

situation as necessary. In addition, the landing craft of a LPD

assault squadron could provide the capability of ship/shore

movement for the embarkation of personnel and vehicles or the

deployment of troops, if required.

CVS and Helicopter Support.

Embarked helicopters in the

NTF will allow the Garrison's Wessex and Scout helicopters to

cease operational flying prior to the final handover. This will

facilitate their timely preparation for final disposal or

possible back-loading to UK.

d.

Integrity and Security of Hong Kong Territorial Waters.

The NTF would be able to assist the HK patrol craft with the

maintenance of the integrity and security of Hong Kong waters to

30 June 1997, and enable the HK patrol craft to cease operations

early enough to facilitate preparation for their final disposal.

e.

Land-based Operational Security. The presence of a NTF

would reduce the number of shore-based installations required to

the end. Consequently, there would be a reduced need for manning

and guarding such facilities, with as many functions

functions being

transferred afloat as soon as practicable.
