FORCE LEVELS

1. Land Element. Currently one UK infantry battalion + 2 Gurkha infantry battalions organised into 48 (Gurkha) Infantry Brigade; supported by Gurkha engineer, signal and transport regiments and the Hong Kong Military Service Corps (HKMSC) which consists of approximately. 1000 locally entered uniformed personnel (LEP). Also one AAC squadron operating 8 Scout helicopters (including 2 in-use reserves).

2. Maritime Element. Currently 3 Peacock class patrol craft based at HMS TAMAR. Patrol craft and base are manned by a mixture of UK service personnel and some 300 LEP.

RAF Element. Currently one squadron operating 8 Wessex helicopters (including 2 in-use reserves).

TASKS

Single service Commander 48,

To support the Hong Kong civil administration and police in the prevention of illegal immigration, the maintenance of law and order and dealing with national disasters and similar events, and to demonstrate HMG's sovereignty over Hong Kong. Police now have full control of border with China.

BRUNEI

7. An in-theatre acclimatised reserve for Hong Kong comprising one Gurkha battalion is stationed in Brunei at the request and full cost of the Sultan.
