the normal daily consumption of rice is 948 tonnes and frozen meat and frozen poultry 771 tonnes (at 1991 level), and assuming that the loading capacity of a lorry is 3 tonnes and 4 journeys can be made per day, 79 lorries and 64 refrigerated trucks will be required for the delivery of the normal daily requirements to the retail outlets. More may be required if a stampede occurs and the vehicular ferry service may have to be called in should there be closure of the Cross Harbour Tunnels.
