WATER

GENERAL

The Director of Water Supplies will try to ensure that supplies to the public are not affected by civil disturbances. If disturbances occur at a time of water shortage, then special measures will be required to maintain a fair and sufficient distribution system and to ensure that service reservoirs do not run dry thereby severely hampering fire fighting operations. The Director has detailed departmental plans covering the various contingencies (Departmental Instructions No. 807).

The Director and his Deputy will operate from Wanchai Tower II, 48th Floor, 7 Gloucester Road, and will issue directives to Depot Commanders. Liaison will be maintained by the Director with the Emergency Public Works Co-ordinating Committee.

The Water Supplies Department will function from two main Depots :

Hong Kong Island :

Waterworks Depot,

King's Road,

(b) Mainland

North Point.

Waterworks Depot,

Argyle Street, Kowloon.

The depots will be responsible for transmitting instructions to the various treatment works and pumping stations and to area operational sub-depots. The main depots will also be responsible for control of water supplies, repair of essential water mains and for disconnection as necessary where repairs cannot be carried out.
