Certain installations are important to the security of Hong Kong and are classified as 'Key Points' (KPs). Examples are the airport, the various power stations and certain communications facilities. Some of these already have Security Forces guards and are designated 'protected places' under the Protected Places (Safety) Ordinance (Cap. 260) or 'closed areas' under the Public Order Ordinance (Cap. 245).

Other Key Points have only civilian security guards in normal times.
