Chapter Three
Military Task 1.25: Ice Patrol Ship
348. The annual deployment of the Ice Patrol Vessel HMS Endurance demonstrates British sovereignty interests in the Antarctic. The Antarctic Ice Patrol vessel HMS Polar Circle was renamed Endurance at a ceremony
in Portsmouth in October 1992, in recognition of the distinction with which her predecessor had served under that name in the South Atlantic since 1968. HMS Endurance - which carries two Lynx helicopters - sailed on her 1992/93 deployment in December 1992. The ice patrol task includes assistance to the British Antarctic Survey, hydrographic survey and
meteorological work.
