Chapter Three - Defence Role One: Protection of the United Kingdom and Dependent Territories
301. The armed forces continue to have day-to-day responsibilities for
safeguarding the United Kingdom's territory, airspace, territorial waters, and the dependent territories and, when required, support for the civil authority. These tasks fall within Defence Role One.
302. Table [6] shows the way in which individual force elements are attributed to policy areas within Defence Role One, using the methodology outlined in Chapter Two.

NATO's new Northwest Region, due to be established in 1994, will
place the landmass of the United Kingdom within Allied Command
Europe (ACE) for the first time; the United Kingdom Air Defence Region
(UKADR) is already incorporated in ACE. As explained in Chapter One,
we continue to insure against a major external threat to the United Kingdom through membership of the North Atlantic Alliance; the forces required for this purpose are therefore discussed in Chapter Four.
