Under paragraph 4 of the Notice, Crown servants may solicit accept any advantage from tradesman, company, etc. in his private capacity in the circumstances set out in sub-paragraph (1)(a) – (d), So long as the advantage is equally available to non-Crown servants; and the donor has no official dealings with the Crown servant.

It is not possible to specify every situation in which a Crown servant is considered to be soliciting or accepting a "restricted advantage" from a tradesman, firm, company, organization or association 'in the
the course of normal business'. Buying at a department store's winter
winter sale, soliciting a loan from bank or negotiating a mortgage would normally be regarded as such.

Crown Servants soliciting and accepting advantages for their own benefit and/or on behalf of their
their staff clubs or associations in their capacity as members or office-bearers of the staff clubs associations are required to apply for permission in accordance with the Notice. They may solicit and accept advantages such as sponsorship for social events and discount, etc. provided the stipulations under para 4(2), para 8 (1) or para 9(1) of the Notice as appropriate are observed.
