HONG KONG: FUTURE BRITISH CONSULATE GENERAL
1. The Design Selection Exercise
Six major UK and Hong Kong architectural practices were
invited on 13 February to submit outline design proposals
for a new building to house the British Consulate General
(including the British Council) plus 9 units of junior staff
residential accommodation. The proposals were submitted in
Hong Kong on 10 April and in Croydon (OED) on 13 April. The
Design Schemes have been assessed and OED have indicated
their preference.

- The track record of the Architects concerned (Farrell) in
terms of on time/on budget performance in Hong Kong;
- Has the preferred design been chosen for the right
reasons: ie not just architecturally pleasing, but most likely to yield an efficient, flexible building within the
budget?
Will the design be able to handle the numbers of people
expected in the British Council and the public areas of the
Consulate-General?
- How about security?
- Will there be separate access to the confidential part of
the building?
What are next steps once a design has been approved?
