Mr Hand also spoke of the Australian policy of multiculturalism. He said multiculturalism, coupled with Australia's immigration policy, made Australia "The most exciting country in the world." He said that by the year 2001 (the centenary of Federation), Australia would be a different mix of people. That did not mean "We will be Asian, it means we won't be like any other country." Immigration meant the development of a culture that was distinctly Australian.
