Lord Glenarthur's "generous" periods of absence

(We have been unable to trace this correspondence in the time available). The absences which are permissible under the 1981 Act are laid down in Schedule 1 of the Act. Beyond that it is impossible to say for the generality of cases what further degree of absence would be acceptable. Each case would be looked at sympathetically on its merits and with due regard for the circumstances necessitating the absences.
